E-Safety

The safety of your children is our top priority. At Shaw Wood children are encouraged to use the internet – but to do so safely and with respect for others. They are regularly taught internet safety as part of our computing and e-safety curriculum, and are equipped with a number of strategies and resources to keep themselves safe. This page offers a selection of resources to help you support safe internet use for your children …

There are 4 main ways that children can be at risk of harm when they are online:

CONTENT Being exposed to illegal, inappropriate or harmful material
CONTACT– Being subject to harmful online interaction with other users
CONDUCT– Personal online behaviour which increases the likelihood of harm
COMMERCE– Risks such as online gambling, inappropriate advertising, phishing and/or financial scams

The most common problems we deal with in school are contact (children having conversations with strangers through apps, games or websites), and conduct (children sending unkind or inappropriate messages to others using messaging apps such as Whatsapp or snapchat). It’s really important, as parents, that you stay familiar with the apps, games and websites your child uses and have open conversations about these.

Ask Yourself:

How much do I know about the websites my child is visiting?

Have I got parental controls installed to prevent my child from accessing unsuitable websites?

What ground rules should I set about the time my child spends online?

Does my child truly understand the need for care when giving out personal details on the internet?

The National Online Safety website has some great parent guides for speaking to your child about online safety, as well as specific guides for apps, games or websites your child may use.
