Swimming
At Shaw Wood we follow the National Curriculum for PE. Swimming is a mandatory part of this curriculum.
The school places a high value on teaching the children this life skill, so they can fulfil the curriculum aims to:
- swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
- use a range of strokes effectively (for example, front-crawl, backstroke and breaststroke)
- perform safe self-rescue in different water-cased situations
The swimming sessions are taught by a qualified swimming instructor from the Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust (DCLT) at Armthorpe Leisure Centre. Members of school staff accompany the children to the sessions.
We believe that children should learn to swim as early as possible and so for the academic year 2024-2025 we have introduced swimming in to our year 3 curriculum for the first time.
Academic Year 2024-2025
The lessons are usually over 11 weeks in a term.
The Year 4 block of lessons are in the spring term, starting week commencing 6th January 2025.
The Year 3 block of lessons are in the summer term, starting week commencing 14th April 2025.
Children in Year 5 and Year 6 who have not achieved the national curriculum level will be allocated a place in one of the blocks. Parents will be notified during the academic year.
